Analytical Chemist Biotech-Food

Our client is a technology platform area that is exploring opportunities to apply our core fermentation and industrial-scale processing expertise.

What are the responsibilities?

  • The role of ‘Analytics Technology Specialist / Analytical Method Development Chemist / R&D Analytical Chemist’ is responsible for leading & delivering key analytical capabilities for biotechnology & bio-process projects within the team. We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, agile, hands-on analytical chemist to lead & grow the analytical capabilities of the Technology Platform group.
  • In this role you will be responsible for developing & executing key analytical assays related to tracking & monitoring of fermentation-based bio-processes (both USP & DSP), & quantification & characterization of existing & novel new bio-products such as proteins.
  • This will involve exploring & optimizing a combination of both established and cutting-edge methods & technologies. You will also have opportunities for consistent multi-disciplinary collaborations with internal R&D groups as well as the company’s external partners to help accelerate the scale-up of fermentation and downstream product recovery processes from the benchtop to the pilot and demonstration levels.

Who is the candidate we are looking for?

  • Degree in Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or a related field. PhD would be a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in an analytics-based role within a demanding technical development (e.g., R&D) and/or operational manufacturing environment (preferably biotech/bio-products/bio-pharma/food/dairy/brewing industry).
  • Strong expertise with chromatographical analytical systems; e.g., HPLC, HPAEC, SEC, GC & LC (with RI, UV, MS, MS-MS, ESI, EC, PAD, MALLS detection systems) is a critical requirement. Experience with chromatographical analytical method validation is highly desirable.
  • Expertise with protein-specific analytical technologies such as LabChip (e.g., capillary electrophoresis), Spectrophotometric methods (e.g., CD spectroscopy), LC-MS, & SDS-PAGE would be a strong distinct advantage.
  • Strong fundamental technical understanding of protein chemistry including characterization of primary, secondary, tertiary, & quaternary structure, and also post-translational modifications (PTMs) would be a distinct advantage.
  • Experience of food biotechnology pr bio-product Quality Assurance, Regulatory Requirements, Food Safety standards, and/or Food Certification (e.g., FSSC2200, IFS, BRC, GFSI) & operating within this environment would be a distinct advantage.
  • Fundamental technical understanding of industrial food biotechnology (or bio-products) USP & DSP processes (fermentation & subsequent downstream purification) would be an advantage.
  • Ability to manage complex projects with multiple workstreams in dynamic/fast-paced R&D environment, coordinating & managing both internal & external stakeholders.
